Its ranking in this year’s survey of the best places for expats also highlights its exceptional quality of life and work-life balance. In addition, it’s easy to get around the city with the help of its comprehensive subway system and one of the world’s most efficient bus networks.
Another Asian hotspot, Hong Kong scores highly in a number of categories, including Quality of Life (ranked fourth), Ease of Settling In (2nd) and Expat Essentials (3rd). It is particularly well-known for its low crime rate and high standard of living. Its reputation as a cultural melting pot and diverse economy continues to draw in global talent, with many international companies setting up offices here.
Affectionately known as the Land of Smiles, Thailand has a strong reputation for welcoming expats. Its performance in this year’s survey reflects that, with the country scoring top marks in the Local Friendliness index and the Ease of Making Friends subcategory. It’s also a great option for those interested in traveling, with its endless beach resorts and vibrant street markets.
Relocating to Mexico may not come as a surprise, as the country has consistently placed within the top five in this category since 2014. The Mexican government is also working hard to improve its global reputation, with a focus on tourism and trade.
With its high-quality schools, friendly locals and affordable cost of living, it’s not surprising that Ecuador is another top destination for expats. Its ranking of fifth in this year’s survey is partly due to its high score in the Leisure Options subcategory, where it excels in both its local culture and the availability of various sports activities.
Panama’s adversity in the Work & Leisure subcategory (30th) and Career Prospects index (45th) is overshadowed by its good performances in other categories, including Expat Essentials (8th), where expats report that it is easy to find and afford housing.
