Safe-Guard (fenbendazole) powder is a common deworming medication veterinarians prescribe to treat and control internal parasites in dogs. It is effective against four major types of intestinal parasites in dogs – roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and taenia tapeworms. This medication is easy to administer – simply mix the powder into your dog’s food. At regular doses, fenbendazole does not cause any significant side effects in most pets. However, in rare cases at higher than normal doses, fenbendazole can cause a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. This is due to the release of a substance by dying parasites that can cause facial swelling, itching, hives and trouble breathing. If you see these signs in your pet, seek veterinary treatment immediately.
Fenbendazole works by binding to tubulin in the parasite and inhibiting its ability to make energy. This starves the parasite and kills it. Your vet may recommend a fecal examination 2-4 weeks after treatment to ensure that all of the worms have been eliminated.
Other brands of fenbendazole include Panacur and Xeromite. These medications are used to treat and control parasites in a variety of animal species including livestock, cattle, pigs and goats. These products can also be used in people under certain circumstances referred to as extra-label use. Talk to your veterinarian about how this medication can benefit your pet and proper administration. fenbendazole powder
